What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an essential part of academic and personal growth and development. Children and adults alike can acquire essential knowledge and skills that aid in the development of healthy identities, attitudes and values that will allow for their holistic and well-adjusted growth through SEL. Significantly, SEL can help individuals to better their emotional management, communication with others, establishing successful relationships, making responsible decisions and setting personal and collective goals.
Why is SEL important?
SEL advances academic equity and furthers academic success through increasing classroom engagement, encouraging healthy relationships and decreasing risky behavior. The SECD Lab is committed to helping to assist in the development of positive classroom cultures to enable the most effective learning environment for all children through our ongoing research, collaborative efforts and meaningful curriculum and instruction. SEL aims to address various forms of inequity and empower individuals of all ages to participate in creating safe, healthy and just communities.
